Recently, Gerhard Reus, the CEO of OMV stated that that the construction of South Stream gas pipe in contemplation would not be abolished though confrontation existed between the Western and Russia owing to Ukrainian situation.
The CEO said, “The gas transmission pipe is program which will last for 50 years. For that, it needs to be treated at a realistic perspective.” He also said that customers were expecting to use South Stream gas pipe to transmit gas. Nevertheless, there is no possibility that list South Stream gas pipe into sanction on gas industry.
What’s more, Reus pointed out that Russia had already begun to transmit gas though Opal gas pipe. Opal gas pipe crosses through Germany and its gas transmission capacity is as high as 36 billion cubic meters. The pipe will connect Nord Stream gas pipe which crossing though the Baltic Sea with current gas transmission net work, though Gazprom has not received permission from EU to operate Opal gas pipe with full load.
Reus insisted that increasing the quantities of gas transmission pipes would contribute to energy security. That is a pragmatic point.
In April, Alexei Miller, the CEO of Gazprom discussed the possibility that expanded gas supply to European consumers bypassing Ukraine with the representatives of OMV. In June, Gazprom signed the shareholder agreement of Austria South Stream Joint Venture to confirm the construction of South Stream gas pipe in Austria and the working principle of operation in the future.
