The Differences between Globe Valves and Gate Valves

The differences between globe valves and gate valves are based on working principles, structures and applied ranges.

Different working principles

The stem of globe valves is rising. Handwheel swings together with stem and rises. The handwheel of gate valves is swinging and stem is rising. They have different flow. Gate valves can turn on completely. Gate valves do not have stipulations on direction of intake and outtake while globe valves have.

Gate valves and gate valves are the two most common valves used for cutting off.

Different structures

In terms of shape, gate valves are shorter while higher than globe valves. Especially, rising stem valves need higher spaces. Sealing face of gate valves has definite self-sealing. The valve bore contact tightly with sealing face of seat to realize non-leakage, depending on pressure of media. Valve core slope of wedge gate valves is general 3~6 degrees. When need to cut off excessive flow constrainedly or temperature volatiles, valve core can be blocked easily. Nevertheless, for high temperature and pressure wedge gate valves, measures are taken on structure in case of valve bore being blocked. When gate valves turning on or off, valve core is always contacting with sealing face of seat and grating each other. In particularly, when valves almost turning off, differential pressure in forward and backward of valve bore is high. Sealing face is suffering from more serious abrasion.

Compared with gate valves, globe valves have the advantages of simple structure, excellent sealing, convenient manufacturing or maintenance while having large fluid resistance and torque. Both gate valves and globe valves belong to types of valves turning on-off completely. They are suitable for using to cut off or connect media. They are inappropriate for using as control valves.

Different applied ranges

Applied ranges of globe valves and gate valves depend on their own characteristics. In small caliber pipelines, globe valves are suitable when good sealing is needed. In steam pipeline or large diameter water supply pipelines, due to small fluid resistance, gate valves are adopted.
